is the theme of the 13th silent film festival in Karlsruhe, that takes place from 18 to 22 march 2015. (http://www.stummfilmfestival-karlsruhe.de/de/home.html)
As a special event with no admission the RhinFilm project is screening two education films or “Kulturfilme”. Both films are accompanied by a scientific introduction and followed by a discussion. With the fight against venereal diseases and publicity for athleticism both films are concerned with two different aspects of hygienic education (“hygienische Volksbelehrung”).
On 18 march 2015, 17:00, after an introduction by Dr. Gabriele Moser, the film “Dürfen wir schweigen ?” (1926) is screened. The theme of health education and the fight against venereal diseases played an important role in the upper rhine region of the 1920s, as the public debates in the press from Baden show.
On 19 march 2015, 17:00, the screening of “Wege zu Kraft und Schönheit” (1925) will follow, with an introduction by PD Dr. Philipp Osten. This film too, which will be accompanied by an advertising film for the “Reichsgesundheitswoche” (1926) and a parody of the 1920s’ body cult “Seffs Weg zu Kraft und Schönheit” (1926), was screened and debated in the upper rhine region in the 1920s.
